Intra-Uterine Device (IUD)

The IUD is a tiny piece of flexible plastic shaped like a T that is placed into the uterus by a clinician. IUDs are one of the easiest to use and most effective birth control methods. They can last for years without doing anything other than checking the string once a month. Some IUDs have hormones that can help regulate your period or even stop it.

If you decide you want to get pregnant or change methods, we can remove your IUD at any time.

No waiting- we can often insert your IUD at your first clinic visit.

We Offer

Non-Hormonal IUDS

  • Paraguard®has a small amount of natural, safe copper and works up to 12 years. Paraguard doesn’t have hormones and doesn’t affect your periods.

Hormonal IUDS

These IUDs release a small amount of the synthetic hormone progestin and may make your periods lighter.

  • Mirena® lasts up to five years.
  • Skyla® is a smaller IUD that might be a good choice for women who have not had a child. It works up to three years.
  • Liletta® lasts up to three years.

How the IUD Works

  • All IUDs change the way sperm cells move to prevent them from reaching the egg and fertilizing it.
  • The Paraguard IUD uses copper to keep sperm from reaching the egg.
  • IUDs with hormones can also stop eggs from leaving the ovary (ovulation).

How the IUD is Used

  • An IUD is placed in the uterus by clinician. When you are ready to remove it, a clinician must do it.
  • A short length of plastic “string” will be in the vagina. Check your IUD strings after each menstrual period.
  • Must be replaced as needed (3-12 years), depending on type of IUD.

Advantages

  • One of the most effective birth control methods
  • Works for a long time but can be removed at any time
  • It’s easy to use. Once in place, you don’t have to remember to do anything except check the string once a month.
  • Private- no one has to know you are using it
  • Sex is not interrupted
  • Women who use IUDs with hormones tend to have lighter periods and less cramping. Some women’s periods stop completely.
  • Can use while breastfeeding; won’t affect how much milk you produce

Possible Problems or Disadvantages

  • No protection against STls including HIV/AIDs.
  • If you get an STI, the infection may be much worse and more damaging.
  • There’s a small chance the IUD falls out all the way or part way. If this happens, go back to your clinic and have it removed. You can get a new IUD inserted.
  • It is extremely unlikely to get pregnant with an IUD, but if you do, you should have the IUD removed right away as there is a higher risk of having a tubal pregnancy and other serious health problems.
  • The IUD is safe for most healthy women, but all medications and devices have some risks and side effects. WAMHS can provide additional information and answer questions to see if the IUD is right for you.
